St. Bonaventure Catholic School is one of three parish schools located in Columbus. It is located on the eastern part of the city of Columbus. The first school opened on Nov. 4, 1878 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate of Joliet, Illinois as a non-denominational school. The beginning enrollment was 80 students. On July 27, 1884 the school was turned over to the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration of Lafayette, Indiana. Later the school was staffed by the same community, but out of the Western Province in Denver and now of Colorado Springs, CO. By 1900, the Academy had sixty-four borders and two-hundred fifty day students. In 1910, twelve grades were instituted. In 1912, the Academy was accredited with Nebraska State University. In 1925, the Academy was purchased from the sisters by the parish and was known as St. Bonaventure School; a parish school for day students. In 1951, an elementary school was built; thus allowing for more room for the high school. St. Bonaventure High School became Scotus Central Catholic High School in 1965, named after the great Franciscan scholar, John Scotus, in tribute to the fine Franciscan tradition. Today, St. Bonaventure School offers a developmentally appropriate curriculum for students in pre-school through sixth grade. The pre-school was begun in 1990 and is housed at the former convent, just north of the current school building. The Kindergarten has two one-half day daily sessions. Extended care is provided before and after school for those students who need it. Religious instruction is stressed and is included with all the core subjects along with computer and technology instruction. Students attend weekly Masses and seasonal Paraliturgies participating as lectors, song leaders, servers, etc. A hot lunch program is provided at Scotus, as well as a hot breakfast for those who wish to participate. Extra-curricular activities include Student Council (grades 5 & 6), Student Representatives (grades 5 & 6), Children's Choir (grades 4 - 6), speech contests, spelling contests, science fair, author of the month, DARE program, etc. The staff consists of a principal, secretary, thirteen homeroom teachers, librarian, mediate specialist, kindergarten aide, remedial/resource teacher and counselor. Through the cooperative effort of the public school, our special education students are served with speech, Title I and resource. We also have a very good relationship with the Educational Service Unit (ESU) #7 located in Columbus. St. Bonaventure priests visit the classroom to provided religions instruction. A strong Home and School Association provides many resources to the school, including financial assistance for programs. A Total Board of Education also provides guidance for the entire educational system of St. Bonaventure .
